Our Journey

The green sanctuary that is BNAC today was not always the place we know it to be. Follow our journey…

2009

Up until 2009, the two acres of land that form the BNAC premises on the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan college campus lied idle and were used mainly as a landfill site. The privacy of the bushes and trees attracted a number of drug-users to spend their days there.

It was at this time that Mr. Himanshu Prem Joshi approached the authorities of the campus with the plan to transform the wasted area into a unique nature park for children and adults alike.

2011

The cleaning work started in 2011, with support from the community. The next step was to undertake a survey on all plants and trees existing on site, which listed 55-60 plant species. In the same year BNAC joined in the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity 2011-2020 as an official partner in India.

… after the first 8 months of work, nature had started to gain back the ground

2012

BNAC was officially inaugurated in January 2012! Two and a half years of hard work had completely reshaped the area into a green and inviting environment.

2013

Between 2011 and 2013, massive plantation of additional trees and plants brought the number of plant species at our premises up to 275!

2017

Today, BNAC looks with pride at its premise, which provide a haven to hundreds of species of plants and trees, over 40 species of butterflies and 55 species of birds…

… the Animal Rescue & Care Centre has rescued, treated and released over 600 birds and other animals …

… the centre has become famous in the Bhavan’s Campus, Andheri and Mumbai as a whole, among both humans and animals…

… and more than 40.000 students have visited the centre, and learnt about the beauty of nature and biodiversity
